What Is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction surgery is intended to rebuild the shape and appearance of the breast following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other trauma. This surgery aims to restore a sense of wholeness for women who have undergone breast cancer treatment or injury. At Carolina Plastic Surgery, we understand how personal this decision is and are dedicated to helping you achieve a result that aligns with your goals. Our surgeons use a variety of advanced techniques to create a natural, symmetrical breast shape and can even reconstruct the nipple if needed.
Should I Get Breast Reconstruction?
Deciding whether to undergo breast reconstruction is a highly personal choice, and there is no right or wrong answer. Many women choose breast reconstruction to help them feel more comfortable in their bodies after breast cancer treatment. Others may prefer not to have additional surgery. It is important to consider your goals, lifestyle, and how reconstruction may impact your emotional and physical recovery. One of the big things to keep in mind is that breast reconstruction is a journey and it will take several surgeries over a period of 6-12 months for completion. During a consultation, our surgeons will discuss your options in detail and help you make an informed decision about what is best for you.
What Are My Breast Reconstruction Options?
Our plastic surgeons offer a range of breast reconstruction techniques tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient. Depending on your personal goals, anatomy, and the specifics of your cancer treatment, you may be a candidate for one or more of the following options:
Autologous Breast Reconstruction
Autologous breast reconstruction, also known as flap reconstruction, uses tissue from your own body — such as from the abdomen, thighs, or back — to rebuild the breast. This technique offers a natural look and feel, as the reconstructed breast is made from your own skin, fat, and muscle. Our surgeons will discuss the risks and benefits of using your own tissue to rebuild your breast.
Breast Reconstruction with Implants
For patients seeking a less invasive option, breast reconstruction with implants can be a great choice. This procedure uses saline or silicone gel implants to recreate the shape and size of the breast. Implant reconstruction may be performed immediately following a mastectomy or delayed until after cancer treatment. In some cases, a tissue expander may be used to gradually stretch the skin before the final breast implant is placed. Our surgeons will work closely with you to select the right type of implant and surgical approach for your body.
Nipple Reconstruction & Tattooing
For patients who desire a more complete aesthetic result, nipple reconstruction and tattooing can be performed to help recreate the appearance of the nipple and areola. Nipple reconstruction typically involves using a small amount of tissue from the breast to form the shape of a new nipple, while 3D tattooing adds color and dimension to mimic the natural look of an areola. This final step enhances the overall appearance of the reconstructed breast.
What Can I Expect in My Breast Reconstruction Recovery?
Recovery after breast reconstruction will vary depending on the type of procedure performed. In general, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the initial weeks following surgery. Our surgeons will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions and prescribe medication to help manage any pain. Most patients can return to light activities within a few weeks, though it may take several months to fully recover, especially for autologous reconstruction procedures.
Our team will monitor your healing and schedule follow-up appointments to ensure everything is progressing smoothly. Your long-term results should gradually improve as the swelling subsides, and you should be able to enjoy the full benefits of your reconstruction in the months ahead.
Does Insurance Cover Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction is typically covered by insurance under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA). This federal law requires most insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction after mastectomy, including procedures on the unaffected breast to ensure symmetry. Our office can work with your insurance provider to confirm coverage and assist you in navigating the financial aspects of your care.
