What Is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts. This procedure is popular among women who are looking to improve the appearance of naturally small breasts, restore breast volume after weight loss or pregnancy, or correct asymmetry between the breasts. By selecting the right type of implant and placement, breast augmentation can help create a fuller, more proportionate silhouette that complements your overall figure.
At Carolina Plastic Surgery, our surgeons take a personalized approach to each breast augmentation, ensuring the results align with your unique goals and body shape. Depending on your needs, breast augmentation may be performed along with a breast lift to simultaneously raise the breasts to a more youthful position. In addition, for mothers wanting to enhance their body shape following pregnancy, a mommy makeover can combine breast augmentation with other procedures, such as tummy tuck surgery, for a more complete transformation.
What Are the Different Types of Breast Implants?
There are two main types of breast implants used in breast augmentation: saline implants and silicone gel implants. Each option offers different benefits, and your surgeon will help you choose the best one based on your aesthetic goals and body type.
What Does the Breast Augmentation Procedure Involve?
Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about one to two hours to complete. During the procedure, an incision is made in one of three common locations: along the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. The location of your incision will depend on the type of implant and your specific anatomy.
Once the incision is made, your surgeon will create a pocket either beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the chest muscle (submuscular). The breast implant is then inserted into this pocket and positioned to achieve the desired shape and volume. After the implant is in place, your surgeon will close the incision with sutures, and a bandage is applied to support the breasts during the initial stages of healing.
What Can I Expect in My Breast Augmentation Recovery?
After your breast augmentation procedure, it is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, tightness, and overall discomfort, especially in the first few days. You will likely need to wear a supportive surgical bra to help reduce swelling and support your breasts as they heal. Most patients can return to light activities within one to two weeks, but strenuous activity, especially those involving the chest muscles, should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.
Our team will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to help you navigate your recovery. You will also have follow-up appointments with us to monitor your progress and address any concerns. While some swelling may persist for a few months, the final results of your breast augmentation will become more apparent as your body heals after several months.
